Zlatibor is the most complete tourist centre of Serbia. This ensemble of old mountains and of great green prairies forms a milieu of particular beauty. Numerous brooks and water sources, so that the majestic fir tree forests contributed to imprint the name of zlati-exceptional, and bor-fir tree. Its mild climate with the sunny summers with the moderate temperature and long but mild winters attract tourist a long time. Situated on the artery binding Belgrade to Montenegro, the tourist complex of Zlatibor is easily accessible by a large and comfortable national road coming from Uzice and by bus linked to the same town.

Geography

Situated on the height of 1.000 meters, Zlatibor is surrounded by four summits of 1,500 meters. In the average Zlatibor is thus a very spread out mountain massive with the landscapes and pastures, fir tree forests and rounded off hills which could be encountered only here. Emir Kusturica wanted to honour this landscape directing his last picture “Life is wonder”.

These very much forested mountains covered by the pastoral houses are distinguished, but also by the numerous water floes. Around the Zlatibor flows Veliki Rzav which is the river with the most pure water in Serbia.. But Zlatibor also has the sources of mineral water as that in the village of Rozanstvo here called Spa or the source of Bela Voda that has medical value. Finally, two mountain lakes even that they are not natural make the landscape still more softened. Situated in the centre of the tourist complex centre and in that of Ribnica near the river Crni Rzav. Up to 600 meters height grow more than 100 different herb kinds and the mountain flowers. Upwards the landscape is dominated by conifers-. black and white fir trees, bastards. During your walks over the mountains and valley you would maybe have a chance to meet the traces of bears and wolves which hide themselves in the high forests. Lower down you surely will see foxes, hares and boars.

History and leisure time

Known at first by the name Rujno, this tourist site became the privileged destination of Turkish aristocracy and of the merchants became rich in XVIII century. Attired by the clean air always dominating here and by the landscape of the hills with green pastures , the Serbian elite established here their summer residence. Rujno became gradually very favourite holiday site.

But the tourism developed itself when King Alexander Obrenovic spent a few day o rest hereon the hills of Kulasevac in 1893.It was sufficient that a few pick-nicks had been organized where the “good people” had been present the villas and summer residences had been constructed. It was customary about 1900 to build or to stay in the place of Kraljeve vode where King Alexander had been organizing his lunches on the grass. On 1908 another king, King Peter Karadjordjevic stay here or the purpose of health. From that moment on, Zlatibor became a centre of rest for chest and nerve diseases thanks to its clean air and its quiescence hotels began to be constructed for this purpose and “Srbija” and “Cigota” for being erected on Zlatibor maintain still today this tradition.

In 1930s great tourist agencies like “Putnik” began to construct their own hotels and launched winter tourism. Two blue pathways, but it is better than nothing, decorate the tourist stay.

The last stage in the development of Zlatibor has been put in 1960s because the communist power decided to popularise the thermal station. The sport fields, and the swimming pools in some hotels make there an excellent site of sports: schools, sport clubs and enterprises develop here the mass tourism. In the 1990s strengthened still more its hotel capacities and develops on two axes: “Zlatibor at Night” and the jolly games of the youth.
