Good bargain

LIPA, Svetozara Miletica 7, Phone: 615 259. In a street adjacent to the pedestrian artery Zmaj Jovina, one of the best establishments of the town. In a hall always anciently top managed with a chimney, little embroidered table cloths, the hunting pictures, a magical place where the atmosphere breathed with peace and gaiety. The meals typical to Vojvodina with fish in sauce or the seasoned grill. One should pay 450 Dinars for a meat dish, 800 Dinars for a fish, 200 for an entrée or a dessert. A good wine card of the region. (430 Dinars a bottle). Traditional music with guitars and tamburitza at the week-end. Demand the first floor in the terrace, or even better, the cellars where you may be served next to the barrels.

FONTANA, Nikole Pasica 27, Phone: 621 779. A typical Serbian tavern situated in the middle of the Pasic street. The Rococo decoration and the benevolent servers have been hiding the treasury of the kitchen. Begin with the corba-the meat and fish soup served in a soup dish, than order grill that would be sufficient for all day long. Meat and fish 300 Dinars, entrée 200 Dinars, a bottle of wine 400 Dinars. In summer time an agreeable inside terrace and a few rooms at the store (700 Dinars per person).

DUNAVSKA OAZA, Dunavska 25, Phone: 428 028. In the pedestrian artery. A little, well kept restaurant in the centre of the town for the fish lovers and in the agreeable ambience. Complete menu 450 Dinars with the entrée, fish, salad, desserts. Think of the cream at will very “central European” in the menu.

Nice and comfortable

BELA LADJA, Kisacka 21, Phone: 616 594. One of the most ancient establishments of the town keeping the tradition of the typical dishes of Vojvodina. Always very animated and one most preferred kinds by the inhabitants of Novi Sad. The interest has been that you would find a menu of 300 Dinars – gulas and salad – up to 900 Dinars. Various kinds of meat in sauce. The menu has been typical of the feast food in Vojvodina with the game such as the pheasant and the duck, everything served in the room, and the fungi on grill you would be licking your lips.
About 20 rooms at 600 Dinars per person have also been at disposal at this address.

TVRDJAVA, Kisacka 21, Phone: 431 122. A unique chance to know a historical establishment of Serbia, where Janika Balas had been playing his tamburitsa for 15 years the typical Serbian music of starogradske pesme. A hall of 250 places breathing the history with the great wooden tables on the edge of which there had been affixed the coats of arms of every town on the banks of the Danube, but also a terrace offering the exceptional view of the town at the nice weather. The kitchen typical for Vojvodina, the game, the fish, dishes in sauce and a cosmopolitan ambience. Five hundred Dinars per dish in the average and the wines between 400 and 700 Dinars.

SLOW FOOD, Salas 137, Cenej, Phone: 714 505. Within a very nice hotel (see under “Lodging”), the light dishes at a reasonable price. Various fresh soups for 150 Dinars and especially the meat dishes out of the chicken coop about 300 Dinars.

Novi Sad by night

When the night fell there began a true ball and the youth groups have been taking walks and have been going to the cafes in the clubs of a noisy rhythm. In the street Modene there have been accumulated very branched restaurants and snack bars where they go to see their last conquered one or the local personalities. The pizza and the ice cream have been served enormously till one o’clock in the morning, but one should go to the galleries at each side of Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska streets to find very nice places.

VINSKI PODRUM, Pasiceva 10. Just 100 meters away from Zmaj Jovina, a little entrance overhead by a barrel and by an inscription in Cyrillic letters: go quickly toward the basement and welcome in the most vivacious and typical to Novi Sad night club. After 10.30 p.m. this ancient wine cellar gets filled up by people of any ages, and the musicians were arriving. While the guitars and tamburitsas are beginning to play the audience are taking over because only Slavs have a gift to invent. And the ritual has been continuing till two o’clock next morning. The dry white wine has here been excellent. Thus, quickly to your baskets and rendezvous in this tavern.

K.G.B. Grckoskolasa 6. A pub tendentious enough that needs just a glance. Bordered by the Soviet flags in honour o the “great” Red Army. This place evidently has been tending to play a displaced role. But when the first surprise passed away, one would be taken by a loud rock music and the liquors served here has been appreciated.

V.I.P. Trg Slobode 2. A club in the basement the entrance of which there is in the first passage to the right of the hotel Vojvodina. A young, but not stiff ambience, a lot of beautiful people and always interesting encounters.
