At 22 km from the Montenegro border, a little away from the town, the Patriarchy of Pec and its four churches. The cultural complex of Pec has not only been the residence of Serbian Orthodox Patriarchy of Kosmet today, but it also had been the orthodox Serbian Patriarchy under the Ottomans (i.e. limited). Pec is thus a saint town for Serbs and the Patriarch of Kosmet has been respected by all Serbs regardless of their political opinions or spiritual convictions.
The ensemble of four churches represented at the same time the spiritual paintings centre and the mausoleums of Serbian archbishops and patriarchs. But especially through the frescoes and wall paintings of the Patriarchy of Pec the whole medieval history of Serbia could be followed. On the dark blue background all internal side of the walls without exception have been decorated by the presentations of the saints and the scenes from the Holy Bible.
THE CHURCH OF THE VIRGIN. Erected by the Patriarch Danilo between 1325 and 1337. Near the entrance the portrait of the founder holding a model of the church as its protector, the prophet Daniel is offering it to the Virgin. In the main piece notice the life of Saint Arsen, Serbian archbishop represented behind to the left in the altar as well as the life of St. John the Baptist with the banquet of Irod on the right. In the narthex a superb genealogical tree of Nemanjics realized in the XIV century with 23 portraits of since Stevan Nemanja, the founder of the dynasty till the Emperor Dusan.
THE CHURCH OF SAINT APOSTLES. In the narthex the Passion from the first quarter of the XIV century. On the South wall the procession of Nemanjics from the same ages could be noticed. Under the dome, on the calotte monumental composition from the XIII century representing the Ascension of Christ. Finally, on the branches of the transept in the South being en face to the altar the portraits of Saint Warriors and of St. Sava. This one has been designated in an inscription the founder of this church. En face the portraits of saint hermits and Simeon Nemanja, the founder of the dynasty if Nemanjics who had abdicated 1196 in favour of one of his sons and got a monk on the mountain of Athos under the name of Simeon.
